Iron Range Rotary Club Hosts Annual Kids Fishing Tournament

Five-year-old Remi Tekautz needed some encouragement from her family and the bribe of a free t-shirt to give a quick kiss to the 2.4 pound largemouth bass she brought to the weigh station during Thursday afternoon’s 50th Annual Gary Carlson Kids Fishing Tournament on Silver Lake in Virginia, but the successful angler who claimed the largest fish of the day up to that point was all smiles afterward. When asked if it was the largest fish she had ever caught, Tekautz replied with a big grin and a quiet “yes”.

With near perfect weather Thursday, the fish responded with the action rapid. Many people reported up to a 15 fish caught with the largest of each species weighed at one of two check-in stations for the chance to win any of the dozens of prizes. After being weighed, each fish was returned to the lake.

Iron Range Rotary members who sponsored the summer kick off event and kept it running smoothly noted the fish were being brought in at a rapid pace and recording bass, rock bass, croppie, a few northern, one perch and more sunnies than could be easily counted.

Iron Range Rotary member Scott Asbach talked about the tournament and why it’s such an important event for the club and the city to host. Asbach talked about Minnesota’s fishing tradition and pointed out that for many area children the tournament is the first opportunity to learn about and enjoy the sport.
