Introducing the Fun of Scouting in Virginia.
The back lawn of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Virginia was filled with laughter and the smell of wood smoke and roasting s’mores Thursday evening as Cub Scout Troop 4125 hosted their first Scout adventure night to introduce scouting to Virginia’s kindergarten through 5th grade boys and girls.
According to Cubmaster Amber Hebl, the night was put together to attract new members to the pack and introduce future scouts to some of the fun adventures awaiting them in scouting. The evening included campfires, roasting s’mores, bottle rockets, and making popsicle-stick bows and arrows.
Future activities for Pack 4125 over the next several months will include their popcorn sale, truck or treat, the rain gutter regatta, the Virginia holiday parade, a fishing day, snowshoeing, and, of course, the ever-popular pinewood derby.
Anyone interested in scouting in grades kindergarten to fifth is welcome to join at any time.
Scouting has been around in Minnesota for 116 years, started by civic leaders concerned with youth engagement and community development. In the early years, Scouting focused on older boys and formed Scouts BSA, but those programs set the framework that later supported younger children’s programs like Cub Scouts.
The first Cub Scout pilot programs launched in the early 1930’s for boys ages 8 to 10. Cub Scout packs quickly multiplied as community schools and suburban neighborhoods grew. In 2018, the Boy Scouts of America introduced Family Scouting, opening all programs, including Cub Scouts, to girls as well as boys, allowing entire families to participate.
