A Shaky Start Puts an End to a Solid Season

Hibbing VFW Post 1221 had high hopes walking into Frandsen Band and Trust Field at Rock Ridge Monday night to face Grand Rapids VFW Post 1720 in the Eighth District Championship game, but Grand Rapids pitcher Tommy Crossley and the rest of the Rapids offense had other ideas.

The game took off on the wrong foot right out of the gate when some wild pitching from Hibbing starter Shea Showalter, paired up with a few defensive miscues behind him, led to a 3-0 Grand Rapids start for the day. The trend would continue into the second, when Post 1720 would tack on two more for a solid 5-0 early-game lead.

Hibbing shortstop Connor Heaton lunges for a sharp line drive during Monday night’s VFW championship game against Grand Rapids.

Hibbing Post 1221 would try to redirect some pressure, getting two people on with walks in the second, but couldn’t find that timely hit to switch the momentum into their favor.

Grand Rapids defense showed the solidness they’ve displayed all season as they shut down whatever chances Hibbing would put on the base path, pairing that with a complete-game, very solid start from Post 1720 pitcher Tommy Crossley, tossing a shutout and ultimately finishing the night with an 8-0 Eighth District Title trophy.
