Defense Shines for the Second Week in a Row
The Rock Ridge Wolverines picked up Friday night right where they left off the week before with a solid defensive performance that shut down the Pine City ground game from the opening kickoff and a strong mix of a ground and air attack that left the Wolverines with a 28-6 home win.
For the second week in a row, Rock Ridge held the opposition to just a single score behind an impressive running defense that wouldn’t let the Pine City Dragons find any opportunity to move the ball. The Dragons early on were able to exploit the pass defense, picking up some big chunks of yardage and having trouble in the red zone until second-half adjustments turned the Pine City passing attack into an advantage for the Wolverines, with interceptions by Jeremiah Rayton and Ben Bakk.
Rock Ridge quarterback Jacob Coombe showed he’s equally effective on the ground and in the air, scoring rushing and passing touchdowns. Wolverines runners Beckett Engel, D’Angelo Gandy, and John Westby controlled the ball all night, and Ben Bakk put on a highlight reel on defense, stripping the ball and returning it 60 yards for a touchdown.
The win puts Rock Ridge at 2- 1 for the early season as they get ready to face North Branch Friday night for their third home game in a row.
