Injury Depleted Wolverines Open Playoffs Tuesday

The injury-depleted Rock Ridge Wolverines finished their regular season Wednesday night facing the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks at Raduenz Field on the Rock Ridge High School campus, dropping the season finale 42-6.

The Wolverines knew they were going to be in for a tough night with the Thunderhawks bringing their undefeated 8-0 record to Virginia, but the veterans and the fill-in group of younger players stepping in for an extensive group of injured veterans gave it their all.

The high-powered Grand Rapids offense proved to be too much for the home team, taking an early 14-point lead in the first quarter and shutting down the Wolverine offense before adding another pair of touchdowns in the second quarter to pretty much put the game away.

Rock Ridge did make some noise near the end of the second quarter, taking advantage of some sloppy play and three personal fouls from Grand Rapids to move down the field and add their first points to the board as time ticked away on the half. The two-point conversion came up just short, leaving the Wolverines with the only points they would see for the game.

Grand Rapids came out strong in the second half, just as they had in the first, taking advantage of some Rock Ridge turnovers and building their lead to 42 before letting time run out at the end of the 4th quarter.

Rock Ridge will likely travel to Cloquet Tuesday night to face Lumberjacks in the opening round of the postseason tournament.
