Celebrating a Successful Season with Food, Fun, and History

The Popular Hull Rust Mineview in Hibbing said goodbye to the 2026 season Saturday with a Last Look celebration featuring a food truck, tours of the area, a pumpkin hunt, campfires, outdoor games, and spectacular views of the fall colors.

Often called the Grand Canyon of the North, the Hull Rust Mahoning Open Pit Iron Mine is a massive, historic iron ore mine. The Mineview grounds and visitor center attract thousands of visitors each year who come to view the 3.5-mile-long, 535-deep active mining pit.

Guests attending Saturday’s Last Look of the Season celebration at the Hull Rust Mineview climb on a shovel on display.

The visitor center relocated to its current overlook in 2017 because mining operations had expanded into the land where the former Mineview was situated, and it generally operates over the summer, opening in the middle of May and wrapping up with a seasonal send-off last Saturday.

The visitor center is managed and operated by the Hibbing Tourist Center Senior Citizens in cooperation with the city of Hibbing, with the active Hibbing Taconite pit being the star of the show.
